Advice from a Bridal Hair & Makeup Artist: Wedding Day Preparation Tips & Tricks

“Hello (Name of Bride), where are your shoes? Where are the wedding invite and rings?”, a very typical question that the photographer will ask the bride while I do her makeup for her on an actual day morning. More often than not, the shoes are outside by the door, the invite is on top of her dresser drawer and the rings are on her vanity table. This means she has to give 3 separate instructions to let the photographer know where all these things are placed. Actual days are already hectic enough, we don’t need all these small things to cause more stress for you. Read on for tips and tricks to help your makeup artist avoid the risk of running late, and also to have a calm and relaxing morning while you enjoy your makeover session.

Save time

  1. Pre-plan everything and make sure all the bridal entourage is in the loop. If you have a habit of showering in the morning, make sure to get up early to do so. Avoid washing your hair if you’d already washed it the night before so you don’t need to blow dry them again. If you really need to wash your hair in the morning, wake up even earlier to make sure you have enough time to blow dry before the makeup artist arrives.
  2. Have your breakfast and coffee/tea before your makeup artist arrives so you’ll be ready to start immediately.
  3. Pack the table that the makeup artist will use the night before you sleep. If you don’t know how big a space the makeup artist needs, you can always take a photo and send it to her to check.
  4. Complete all traditional customs like hair combing before makeup artist arrives.
  5. Put all the things that others will need at one place so they can just go and find whatever they need themselves or you can always send them a text to let them know where to find the things they need beforehand.
  6. Have someone in your household who knows where everything is placed ready to answer your bridesmaids’ questions when they prepare for the gate crash games in the morning.

Have a relaxing and calm wedding morning by being prepared.

Makeup and Hair Service Prep

  1. Make sure your face and hair are clean and completely dry before your makeup artist arrives.
  2. Avoid exfoliating facial treatments less than 1 week before your AD. If you feel there’s a need to exfoliate, you can consider chemical exfoliation on your own at home 2 nights before. Remember to exfoliate and moisturise your lips too!
  3. Do not go for brow waxing, threading or plucking if you’re prone to become red after such procedures too close to your AD. Do it around 3 days before so your skin has enough time to rest and the redness can subside fully.
  4. Do not pick on any blemish or pimples. You can always opt to visit a dermatologist to get a jab to calm the swelling but do not squeeze!
  5. If you have not done any bridal trials, prepare photos of makeup and hairstyles that you want.
  6. Wear a nice button up top or a bridal robe so you won’t mess up the hair when changing.
  7. Do not apply any hair oil or products on your hair. However, if you have very soft, fine and not a lot of hair, you can consider spraying sea salt spray on your towel-dried hair before you blow dry your hair the previous night.

Try to pick photos from your artist’s portfolio or Instagram. This ensures that the style fits their aesthetics and it’s also a way to show that you appreciate their work.

Other things to consider

  1. Avoid strap indents/marks on your chest/back by wearing a strapless bra, or even no bra at all when you go to sleep. Put on your stick-on bra before the makeup artist arrives.
  2. Remember to exfoliate your body before the wedding, and moisturize well the previous night with lotion.
  3. Drinking ample water will help promote a healthy glow to the skin, while limiting sugar and salt at least one week prior to the wedding, and cutting dairy intake completely at least two weeks prior to the wedding, will help keep breakouts, bloating and water retention to a minimum.
  4. If you are wearing contact lens, remember to put them on before your makeup artist arrives. It will help your eyes look bigger if you go for coloured contacts with slightly bigger rim. But remember not to get the overly exaggerated types!
  5. If you are wearing a veil, it will be wise to iron/steam the veil the night before or when you receive it from your bridal shop. Remember to hang it up so it doesn’t crumple anymore.
  6. Try taking a small dose of Melatonin around dinner time, with food, if you know that you will be too excited to go to bed. It will be a tiring day so you need all the rest you can get the night before. Having a goodnight sleep will help you wake up looking more fresh and well rested. If you are afraid melatonin will make you lethargic in the day, a cup of coffee will help.
  7. Set multiple alarms if you know you are someone who snoozes the alarm indefinitely. Make sure to get someone else in your family to wake you up if you’re not confident of waking up on your own.

Yi Ling’s AD

Has it been 9 months since Yi Ling’s big day? Time really does fly by quickly when you’re busy (wedding season lasted the whole of 2nd half of 2019 and I was waking up at 2 or 3 am every weekend). I’m currently sitting in my study room where my vanity table is as I type this post out.

Covid19 has swept through the globe forcefully leaving us with so many casualties and deaths. I’m feeling more afraid than sad that I am without any job now as we go into the ‘soft lock down’ as I would like to call it but my country leaders call it the circuit breaker. Everyone is supposed to work from home now if you’re not in essential services which I’ve been doing for the past 3 weeks or so because almost all of my brides have either postponed or cancelled their weddings.

So, here I am so free from actual money making work, typing this overdue post out in front of a mirror that has my own reflection instead of my client’s.

During our trial, we had discussed and decided that natural style with a braided updo will be the most suitable for her in the morning of her Actual Day. I think my style has been largely dictated by what my brides ask for so what you see here is what I typically do for my brides. Very natural, slightly enhanced and adjust double eyelids, healthy glowing skin achieved with the right skincare that goes underneath the makeup.

Not every is blessed with even double eyelids, in fact, most of us don’t unless you had gone under the knife to achieve those balanced parallel double eyelids. Yi Ling’s eyes are only slightly different which can be easily corrected with double eyelid tapes and the appropriate way of attaching the lashes.

This is my first time working with Cepheus from Cepheus Chan Photography. He is one of my preferred partners so my brides get some discounts from him 🙂 I love how he captured the moments shared by the couple and also taking time out to take some portrait shots of each of them. I’m very thankful for photographers who do this because it means more portfolio photos for me if the brides are willing to share.

Yi Ling is also my first common bride with Amy from Amyt Fleur. We are currently planning to come up with a long term Prewedding and Solemnisation Package so stay tune to both our social media platforms when the details are launched. Amy has been such a lovely vendor to work with. She knows what types of floral to give for the hair so that the MUAs don’t have a hard time trying to make sure the flowers don’t come off after we leave.

For Yi Ling’s style change, we converted her updo into this textured mermaid braid which I love love love. Ever since I posted this hairstyle on my Instagram, I have so many brides who asked to have this hairstyle. I’ve since made many variations of this style and I am still very amazed with how versatile this hairdo is.

Cepheus’ wife, Madeline, who is also a MUA was the 2nd shooter for that day. She’s a dear friend of mine so she came up to take some behind the scenes for me which I am so grateful for. Behind the scenes are usually taken at the bride’s place in the morning and most people don’t really take any photos before the first march in. It’s great to work with vendors you know because they will go the extra mile. All my partner vendors are extremely helpful and more than willing to give you more than you ask for as long as you’re reasonable and nice people. More of than not, it pays to be kind.

Awww…looking at these photos make me want to go back to work. Covid19 can you please go away!!!! Can Singaporeans be responsible and stay at home. Don’t go out unnecessarily. It is paramount we push through this circuit breaker and not let things spiral out of control. Please know that the frontliners are working so hard and some have even fallen sick because of the very virus they’re trying to fight. We can fight this as long as we all play a part by staying home.

Hairstyles to match kua and cheongsam

Donning a traditional outfit for your wedding is in itself a very classic style that will never go out of trend. Several of my brides chose to wear a kua or cheongsam for their wedding day. They were the epitome of elegance and beauty on their special day.

Be it the traditional embroidered outfit or the ones that are made with a modern twist, there are several makeup, hairstyles and accessories that make it complete.

Here are some of my real brides and also models for styled shoot who donned these exquisite kua and cheongsam either for their actual day or for their prewedding shoot.

Here’s Pamela and her husband, both in traditional kua (bride) and ma kua (groom), during their prewedding shoot. For her makeup and hairstyle, we went for a classy natural makeup along with a low messy chignon, accessories by gold floral hair pins. Pair it with a black hat and rounded shades for a Shang Hai Tan feel for the gentleman, and the lady can either hold a bouquet of flowers which colours contrast with the kua ever so nicely or a wooden hand held fan.

Kelina opted for a more ‘warrior-like’ kua for her wedding day. She asked for a messy high bun and adorned it with a gold dangling accessory to complete the look.

For a hipster vibe, match your outfits with rounded shaded, smoking pipes (as props only!) and a pair of open toe wedge. Evelyn and her husband did their prewedding shoot with both kua and cheongsam. The bouquet is created by the bride herseld, isn’t she just so so so talented?

Eunice custom-made 2 sets of cheongsam for her big day. She donned a beautiful and classy white cheongsam that has jade buttons that go from the neck area all the way to her hips. I created a braided low bun that’s decorated with some florals given by her florist for a modern twist to this look. Just look at how the colours of her bouquet stood out from her white outfit. And, who says you can’t put on a transparent veil when you’re wearing a cheong sam?

For her evening look, to pair with her red cheong sam, I gave her a cherry red lip which will brighten up her face. I also created a high bun for her so that we can show off the beautiful lace details in the collar.

Vicki chose to 出嫁 in kua and she also requested for a knotted updo aka 同心结. The double celtic knot created on her head symbolises double happiness, never-ending love and the tying of two hearts. She also completed her traditional look all the way with a traditional red chinese veil aka 红盖头.

How about cheong sams that are more modern? How should you pair it? Shi Ying here rented this beautiful pink cheong sam from The Gown Connoisseur. She wanted her hair down, something different from her morning upstyle, and so we went for a side swept hairstyle.

Ivy’s ROM

Ivy engaged my makeup and hair services for her ROM last year. She was referred by my other bride Singyee. Thank God for these 2 brides because they are so pretty! Embarrass to say this but pretty brides do help my portfolio a lot. Really thankful for their trust! One of them is already a mom and another one is also a mom-to-be! So happy for both of them!

Her ROM was held at Dempsey COMO and it was my first time at that restaurant. I’ve never even been there for a meal. Great place to hold a small solemnisation ceremony with your loved ones.

We went for more smokey makeup which Ivy requested and a textured, tousled updo decorated with florals. Her lovely dress is from amazing Taobao. Can you tell? The quality looks good!

She very kindly shared these 2 photos with me, taken by Bryan from Antelope Studios.

Tiffany & Yaoyi’s PWS

Totally in love with this set of photos from Keloysius. This was our 2nd time working together and 1st time I met him briefly which he was in the car and me walking towards my cab. Haha. Tiffany’s bouquet was by Whimsical Blooms.

Tiffany engaged me for her PWS and also makeup and hair for her mom and sis on her AD. She has been one of my greatest supporter, often sharing with other brides about me on the budget brides fb group, and also liking and telling me how good my work are when I post them on my IG. My passion is fueled because of such lovely brides. Thank God for sending such beautiful people my way.

Kind words from the bride, Tiffany.
Xin Er needs no introduction as she’s been highly recommended by brides-to-be. I’ve loved her works just by seeing her portfolio and was so looking forward to engage her.

She is very detailed and takes great pride in her work. She did such a great job in covering my dark eye circles and to ensure that my double eyelids are well defined. I love how she doesn’t rush just to get the job done quickly but really ensure each step is done properly. Can’t wait to engage her again!

My hair is relatively short but yet she managed to do a classy low chignon for my PWS and arranged the loose flowers so nicely on my hair. So grateful to have her!

My makeup started at 4am and she just returned from a trip and landed at 2am. Very thankful that she still decided to take up my job request. Despite the fatigue, she was still very bubbly and I had an enjoyable conversation with her during the session.
